I figure there are some Canadians here, so can anyone tell me what poutine is? Can anyone even tell me how to prounounce it?
This is what I think I know. Poutine is fries with some really bad looking stuff on top. That, and don't get it from McDonald's because it will taste like crap and wreck poutine for you (as a friend from Montreal told me.) |

Poutine is what you eat before riding your bike downtown to Le Cheval Blanc to see the Dead Milk Men.
Before your daily constitution of 3 Fin de Monde, you are probably pronouncing it as (poo teen) but after all that beer you are probably now pronouncing it (puh tin) as the professional drunk from Tatoo Land (Hochelaga area of Montreal) beside you in the club is. Lots of differnt accents in Quebec and covert prestige (linguistic term) is for me.
Cheese curds is what I look for in real poutine - not simply grated cheese. White cheddar cheese clumps, you know. And gravy that doesn't taste like artifical sodium crap from some fast food place. And you gotta have lots of both. The fries should be wedges and almost be drowning in gravy and it has to be hot enough to melt the cheese curds. Then you can add ketchup or vinegar or whatever you want with the melted gravy/cheese mix until you find the right taste for the little espece de couchon that you may be. _________________ Cheese Addict |

Ahhh, alright. Wow, I still don't know if that sounds good...
I always pronounced it "pow-teen." But I never really said it ever because I didn't want to embarass myself.
I wish I could have eaten poutine and then gone to see the Dead Milkmen! I was too young though. |

Mmmm, poutine!
Last time I visited Canada I couldn't get enough of the stuff! This time round i've managed to abstain, for over three months! Not bad if I do say so myself.
Although my taste-buds are cursing me I think my arteries are quietly thankful.
You can't please everyone eh! |
